How to Utilise Right Brain Learning to Learn the Chinese Language

The human brain is a very complex and intriguing organ that controls all body processes. While the left half of the human brain is known to be responsible for speech and logical thinking, the right side is associated with being responsible for visualisation, arts, and creative thinking. However, this does not mean that language and speaking are not linked with the right brain. By combining the creative right brain functions with learning the languages, we can maximise our brain's capacity to learn and tremendously multiply our efficiency in memory and conceptual comprehension of the Chinese language.

In this article, we will explore on how we can learn Chinese by incorporating Brain Development; specifically using Right Brain learning.

Why Choose Right Brain Learning? What are the Benefits?

When utilising the right brain in learning, our memory thoroughly improves with the help of visualisation and photographic imagery, advancing our brain's recalling ability tenfold.

For example, a conventional method of studying Chinese:

We plainly memorise the 'han yu pin yin' and its meaning with repetition over and over again, to be able to read and understand it. This traditional mundane method may sound familiar and is commonly associated with children's annoyance for studying the Chinese language, and not the most efficient for memorising.

With right brain learning, we encourage an alternative approach:

We utilise our imagery and visualisation abilities to associate with the word we are learning. Let us say we are learning the definition of the Chinese word “人” (ren: human); We can simply imagine the shape of a human walking with their legs spread in the shape of the word “人”!

The Chinese Character “人” (ren: human)

Now, this may seem too straightforward and easy since the word “人” is very simple for the purpose of an example, but we are able to replicate the same method for more complex words and progressively remember harder words as we improve! The next time that we forget what “人” means in an exam, we will recall the shape and action of the human walking with long strides and instantly remember. Amazing, right?

Moreover, right brain helps with creativity. By training your right brain more, you will develop creative cognitive abilities, being more artistic and creative by nature. Training your child to be creative will surely pay dividends in future, even if they do not aspire to be musicians or artists: they will be better at problem-solving, thinking out of the box, ideating, communicating, and more.

“Right Brain Chinese” is a novel breakthrough from the traditional way of teaching. It helps develop your child’s intuitive capability by teaching how to utilise their right brain power, in order to vividly capture the photographic images of each Chinese character to learn much more efficiently.

Tips and Strategies to Activate Right Brain Learning

For a proper right brain development, classroom teaching must be lively and vibrant, including hands-on activities, image/diagram usage, and other forms of creative mediums. Only through this environment, students are able to truly activate their right brain, not only enjoying learning but also achieve significant progress. At Epoch Talent Academy, we stimulate a lively environment by utilising unique and interesting lessons, for example: lively songs, music, stories, reading materials and flashcards to subtly combine the Chinese language and Right Brain development.

Next, it is to incorporate the 5 sensory elements while we learn. As mentioned above, the sensory elements will improve our memory and stimulate our right brain. By visualising and kinetically simulating the action of the thing we are learning, we will be able to remember and associate with our learnings more. Through engaging with activities that interact with the 5 senses, our students at Epoch Talent can then learn the language in a fun and lucid way, thus emerging eloquent and confident in Chinese in the long run. Finally, we should allow a healthy and free space for the student to learn while having fun. Traditional classrooms are extremely limiting and restrictive, forcing children to sit down and listen to lectures for hours without breaks, and even punishing students for discussing among classmates. To properly stimulate right brain learning, we need to allow a fun space where students can freely express what they learned through discussions, drawing, kinaesthesia and other outlets. By allowing this freedom of expression and fun culture, students can then fully absorb what they learned in our Chinese class.
